It is truly incredible how quickly the South Lawn Project is developing. Just a couple of months ago, the steel beams for the pedestrian walkway across Jefferson Park Avenue were installed-- in the middle of the night, nonetheless! This was for traffic purposes, as they had to (understandably) shut down the street during the operation. The walkway will connect New Cabell (surely begging for a donor renaming) to the South Lawn grounds. Word on the street is that it will be a green walkway, as in, an actual Lawn, and since "green" means at least two things around here, it might even be some kind of energy-saving or energy-producing feature.
Steel supports for the walkway are already in place, 30 feet into the ground. That's three stories! The north end of the walkway will one day be connected to New Cabell. A huge cement-lined bowl has been constructed on this north end, and it will soon be filled with crushed stone, as part of the weighting and support system for the walkway.
Photo by GFC, 2008.11.11 UVA sees many square, brick structures popping up, but circular and bowl shapes are rare. So far, the South Lawn Project has given us two to look forward to-- the walkway bowl on the north side of the street, and the "New Rotunda" on the south side.
